"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are we not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us, it’s in everyone. And as we let our light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fears, our presence automatically liberates others." - Marianne Williamson

Kung Hei Fat Choi!
The lucky year of the golden rabbit begins tomorrow, February 3rd, 2011.
...the oldest and most important event in China, the Spring Festival, more popularly known as Chinese New Year. Chinese New Year is a celebration of the Earth coming to life. It ushers in the beginning of the plowing and planting season.
The Chinese believe that the New Year is an opportune time for a fresh start, and so they prepare for it way ahead of time by cleaning their homes and getting rid of junk, repaying debts, having a hair cut, buying new clothes, paying respect for their departed ancestors, and offering prayers to the gods for a good and prosperous year. Chinese tradition has it that the Rabbit ushers in a year in which we can all “catch our breath and calm our nerves.” It is a time for negotiation and diplomacy. ~mb.com
A placid year, very much welcomed and needed after the ferocious year of the Tiger. We should go off to some quiet spot to lick our wounds and get some rest after all the battles of the previous year.
Good taste and refinement will shine on everything and people will acknowledge that persuasion is better than force. A congenial time in which diplomacy, international relations and politics will be given a front seat again. We will act with discretion and make reasonable concessions without too much difficulty.
A time to watch out that we do not become too indulgent. The influence of the Rabbit tends to spoil those who like too much comfort and thus impair their effectiveness and sense of duty.
Law and order will be lax; rules and regulations will not be rigidly enforced. No one seems very inclined to bother with these unpleasant realities. They are busy enjoying themselves, entertaining others or simply taking it easy. The scene is quiet and calm, even deteriorating to the point of somnolence. We will all have a tendency to put off disagreeable tasks as long as possible.
Money can be made without too much labor. Our life style will be languid and leisurely as we allow ourselves the luxuries we have always craved for. A temperate year with unhurried pace. For once, it may seem possible for us to be carefree and happy without too many annoyances. ~theholidayhotspot.com

People born in the year of the Rabbit are generally calm, gentle, and loving. While they may sometimes be perceived as timid, people born under this sign view themselves as wise and cautious. They are rarely known to act or jump into situation without first carefully considering all their options. At work, they are noted to excel by remaining cool and collected. They can be relied upon for extreme tact in delicate business dealings. ~mb.com.

More cause for celebration!! The lantern festival takes place fifteen days later on February 18th, 2011. In these next two weeks visit your favorite chinese joint, heat up some Annie Chung's at home, eat with chopsticks, decorate with hellokitty, visit your local asian market or Chinatown and crack open a few fortune cookies.

Having a husband is a funny thing
Rudimentary child-order traits:
Oldest Child: Reliable, conscientious, aggressive, serious, intellectual, and stubborn. Natural leaders, perfectionists, achievers, people pleasers with a strong need for approval who don't like surprises. Need the attention and guidance they grew used to in their early years, but are less likely to say so. Over half of U.S. presidents are firstborns. In one word: Conscientious.
Only Child: The uber-oldest child. Even more responsible and a perfectionist. Tend to hang out with people older than themselves. In one word: Intellectual.
Middle Child: Independent, inventive, laid back, easy-going, and spontaneous. Read people well, see all sides of a situation, and act as peacemaker. Secretive with their thoughts and feelings, but also attention grabbers. Middle children build a very tight knit group of friends and peers outside the family. Middle children are the hardest to pin-down so the above characteristics may contradict each other. They seek approval of, but often are the complete opposite from the oldest sibling. In one word: Agreeable.
Youngest Child: Social, outgoing, secure, creative, financially irresponsible, just want to have a good time, love the limelight, charming, manipulative, spoiled, and helpless. In one word: Extravert.

These generalizations are, of course, muddled by age differences, sex, mixed families, new marriages etc... But you may find they apply to you or those you know. Generalizations like these can help us to accept our own characteristics or better understand why those around us act the way they do.

J and I are an First Born-Last Born mix, which is very compatible for pretty obvious reasons. I still have not gotten used to the idea of being married and every time I hear "your husband," I still giggle. Probably because I am a youngest child.

Astrid versus the volcano

Me to J: "Tell me something to draw."
J to Me: "Draw a volcano." Pause. "Draw you being lowered into a volcano and me coming to rescue you." Pause. "Julian versus the volcano."
When it's nice and warm, but January nonetheless: booty shorts and short fuzzy booties! Other options that aren't so easy to get away with in any old climate, but do so seamlessly in California: leg warmers and ballerinas, skirts and just-below-the-knee scrunchy boots.
'Willpower' is a diet buzzword this day in age and therefore, I refrain from using it in my vocabulary. 'Discipline,' on the other hand, is good old-fashioned and yoga friendly. Living under my own roof and left to my own devices, I could certainly use a little more discipline, and so "Discipline" is my current mantra.
Discipline for me right now means attending yoga regularly, keeping a clean home, hyper-organizing my belongings, celebrating holidays properly and commemorating special events, not googling random crap or celebrity gossip, preparing for bed before I'm too tired, drinking more water, and tackling the doomed and ever-looming wedding photo project. What does discipline mean to you at this moment?

"I only eat fish- no chicken, no turkey, just fish. I get all my protein from fish and egg whites."
"I do it as therapy. I do it as something to keep me alive. We all need a little discipline. Exercise is my discipline."

A day in the life...
Quick Change: OMG, it's OM glamour!
Extra-firm-tofu (from Trader Joe's) two ways:
Both are one-pan dishes! We know what that means, easy clean-up! 1. Bake olive oil brushed and seasoned tofu at 400 for 15min with other veggies of similar size, yams shown. Serve with a large leafy salad. 2. Simmer tofu and other veggies in lite coconut milk with chosen seasoning; zucchini, apple, cayenne pepper and cinnamon above right. Serve over soba noodles.
Tofu is easy(er) to have on hand than the more perishable poultry/fish/meat. Extra firm tofu is easier to get meat-eaters or picky peeps to eat as it has a dense and chewy, agreeable consistency.
